Teenagers and students have an average of more than 800 illegally copied songs each on their digital music players,as the largest academic survey of young people’s music ownership has found.

The research also showed that half of 14 to 24yearolds were happy to share all the music on their hard drives, enabling others to copy hundreds,or thousands,of songs at one time.

Although_illegal_copying_has_become_widespread,the_scale_of_the_problem_uncovered_by_the_University_Hertfordshire_left_the_music_industry_surprised.On average every iPod or digital music player contained 842 illegally copied songs.

British Music Rights argues that the solution partly lies in developing new legal services that make breaking copyright unappealing(无吸引力的).

Mr.Sharkey, chief executive of British Music Rights, said,“The positive message is that 80 percent of downloaders said they would pay for a legal subscriptionbased(签署协议的)service, and that they would be willing to pay more than a few pounds month.”

British Music Rights refused to release the exact amount but it is believed to be about £10 a month.

The organization is trying to help to record companies persuade Internet service providers to sign up to a new type of music service,in which vast catalogues of songs are available for an addon fee to a broadband package.Agreements with providers such as Virgin Media are expected in the next few weeks.

In France last week,Orange,France Telecom’s mobile arm, reached agreement with all four main record companies to provide downloads of more than a million songs for mobile phones and home computers for £9.40 a month.

A new project will try to protect twentyone of the world’s most important food crops. This is a joint project of two organizations, the Global Crop Diversity Trust and the United Nations Foundation. It will be the largest such effort ever made.

The aim is to collect seeds or reproductive material from one hundred sixtyfive thousand varieties of the crops. The effort will secure more than ninetyfive percent of the endangered crop diversity represented in gene banks in developing countries.

The fight against hunger cannot be won without securing crops that are in danger of being lost. Many of the crops are known as “orphan crops ”. Orphan crops do not get much attention from modern plant breeders but are especially important in poor countries.

Some orphan crops cannot be grown from seeds. Instead, cuttings, roots and cell cultures will be gathered from gene banks.

Still another goal is to improve communications between farmers and plant breeders. The organizers say they look forward to a time when breeders in Africa can find the same crop genetic information as those in Europe and North America.

The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has agreed to provide thirty million dollars for the project. Norway will provide seven and onehalf million dollars.

The Global Crop Diversity Trust says at least four hundred fifty thousand seed samples will go into the Svalbard Global Seed Vault. Seeds from around the world will be stored there in case the planet suffers a terrible disaster.

A nosebleed can be frightening to get or see,but try to stay calm. Most nosebleeds look much worse than they really are.Almost all nosebleeds can be treated at home.

If you get a nosebleed, sit down and lean slightly forward.Keeping your head above your heart will make your nose bleed less.Lean forwards so that the blood will flow out of your nose instead of down the back of your throat. If you lean back, you may swallow the blood. This can make you uncomfortable.

Use your thumb and index fingers to press together the soft part of your nose.Keep holding your nose until the bleeding stops.Don’t let go for at least 5 minutes. If it’s still bleeding after that, hold it again for 10 minutes straight. You can also place an ice pack across the toe of your nose.Once the bleeding stops, don’t do anything that may make it start again, such as bending over or blowing your nose.

The most common causes of nosebleeds are dryness(often caused by indoor heat in the winter)and nose picking. These two things work together-nose picking occurs more often when the liquid in the nose is dry.Other, less common causes include injuries, colds or cocaine use.Children may stick small objects up their nose.Old people may have infections or high blood pressure. The cause of nosebleeds is often unknown.

Most nosebleeds aren’t serious. They occur in the front part of the nose and stop in a few minutes.

A few nosebleeds start in large vessels(血管)in the back of the nose, which can be dangerous. They may occur after an injury. This type of nosebleed is more common in the elderly and is often due to high blood pressure, daily aspirin use or bleeding disorders.

4.【解析】选C。在so+adj....+that...

be absorbed in...

注意:isn’t与either...or... He likes his brother neither in appearance nor in character。

With pleasure 乐意地;It’s kind of you你真贴心;Don’t mention it不用客气;Have a nice trip祝你旅途愉快。

“owe...to...” 归于……”,应该是“Franklin owed his success in public life to his ability to learn from observations and experience.”;attach...to...

10.【解析】选A。

Everyone wants some degree of success. Many people believe that they deserve success simply because they believe that they deserve success.

But there is a widespread belief that people who get on in life may be successful not because they deserve it, but because of influential (有影响的) friends or the right background. Sometimes it may just be a comforting and harmless belief, while at the other extreme it can be very destructive. I once met a brilliant young engineer who worked in a chemical plant. Because of her knowledge and experience, she should have been promoted to Production Manager. Instead, the job went to a man who was totally unsuited for the post. Everyone knew that he only got it because he was politically acceptable to his superiors (上司). This injustice discouraged the young engineer and many of her colleagues. It also meant that the factory was much less efficient than it could have been.

At the same, we should not be pessimistic (悲观的). More and more then modern world depends on having people who are in the job because they are good enough, not just because their faces fit. There is a story of a factory owner who sent for an engineer to see to a machine which would not go. He examined it, then took out a hammer and tapped, once. The machine started up immediately. When he presented his bill, the owner protested, “This can't be right! $ 100 just for tapping a machine with a hammer?” The engineer wrote out a new bill: “For tapping a machine, $1; for knowing where to tap. $99.”

56. The engineer at the chemical plant was not promoted because _____.

A. it was politically less good for the boss to accept her than the man

B. her boss did not think she had the fight qualifications for the job

C. the man who got the promotion was more experienced than she was

D. it is more difficult for a woman to get a promotion than for her male colleague

57. The engineer who repaired the machine was right in charging $ 100 because____.

A. he hit the machine to get it started again

B. the factory owner could not have repaired it himself

C. he was charging for his knowledge and expert skills

D. he was the only person who could find out what was wrong with it

58. What can we learn about the author's attitude toward the widespread belief that “people get on in life may be successful not because they deserve it”?

A. He quite agrees with it.

B. He doesn't express his opinion his opinion at it.

C. He completely disagrees with it.

D. He doesn't quite agree with it.

59. According to the text, which of the following is NOT true?

A. Having influential friends or right background seems helpful sometimes.

B. The engineer had good reason to overcharge the factory owner.

C. Not all those who are good in their jobs have the chance to be promoted.

D. Those who are good in their jobs are still largely needed by the modern society.

Like business and industry, the academic world is changing with technology Advancing. A library is one place where we can see changes. Many innovative(革新的) things are happening in both public and university libraries. Libraries using new equipment and techniques for research, and librarians are teaching students the new techniques.

One service that some university libraries are now providing is a computer search of materials for students doing research. Before starting a research project, students may check with their library to see if a computer search is worthwhile. The computer looks for these words in this database and gives you a list of reference for your topic. A computer can take two or more ideas and produce references that combine those ideas. A computer search can also be more complete than a manual search.

College and university libraries are providing other technological services as well. Another change is the frequent use of microfilm. Libraries are able to collect building by having newspapers, magazines, and other documents on microfilm. Students use microfilm readers in the library for these materials.

Many people like the feeling of the gentle wind in spring. Many like to see the falling leaves dancing in the wind in autumn. But sometimes, when the wind becomes a storm, it can be very destructive

A series of such storms struck the US last month and caused very serious damage and human pain.

Every year, major storms cause many problems around the world. There is nothing people can do to stop these powerful forces of nature. But new techniques are helping scientists to predict(预测) how, when, and where big storms will happen. The more exact scientists’ warnings are, the better people can prepare for the storms.

Predictions are improving. “We’ve gotten better over the years, especially the last few years,” says Phil Klotzback, a scientist at an American university. How is a storm formed? Even if scientists know where a storm will happen, winds can suddenly change, carrying the storm to a new direction. “For a hurricane to happen, conditions have to be just right,” Klotzback says.

1.(高考福建卷)________ not to miss the flight at 15∶20,the manager set out for the airport in a hurry.

  A.Reminding

  B.Reminded

  C.To remind

  D.Having reminded

Dina,________ for months to find a job as a waitress, finally took a position at a local advertising agency.

  A.struggling B.struggled

  C.having struggled D.to struggle

3.(高考江西卷)________ the right kind of training, these teenage soccer players may one day grow into international stars.

  A.Giving B.Having given

  C.To give D.Given

If they are given the right kind of training,可知主语they即these teenage soccer players与give之间是被动关系,所以用过去分词。

4.(高考四川卷)________ many times,he finally understood it.

  A.Told B.Telling

  C.Having told D.Having been told

5.(高考天津卷)________ by the advances in technology, many farmers have set up wind farms on their land.

  A.Being encouraged B.Encouraging

  C.Encouraged D.Having encouraged

6.(汕头高二检测)________ in 1636,Harvard is one of the most famous universities in the United States.
